Many lifestyle factors can contribute to the formation of lines and wrinkles on the face; even laughing and smiling can leave their trace. Obviously, nobody wants to stop laughing and smiling, so many people opt for anti-wrinkle injections often referred to as Botox®.
Botox® is very popular; thousands of men and women have these injections every year in the UK alone, usually to relieve lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes – it is also used to treat excessive sweating. However, it is a prescription-only medicine, so you must discuss your potential treatment with a qualified practitioner. Together you can decide whether Botox® is a good option for you.

Botox® is actually a proprietary name for botulinum toxin, a naturally-occurring protein that relaxes muscles. When used in the facial area, this relaxation effect smooths out wrinkles and lines.
Anti-wrinkle injections are often chosen by women and men who want to reduce lines or wrinkles around their eyes and/or on their forehead.
· Anti-wrinkle injections can help to smooth out wrinkles and lines, which makes them much less visible.
· The injections relax the muscles, which can help to prevent further lines forming.
· Lots of people like anti-wrinkle injections because they are non-invasive (they don’t involve surgery) and convenient – in most cases patients can go straight back to their daily business after treatment.
Everybody’s face develops fine lines and wrinkles over time, because the collagen and elastin fibres that naturally support the skin and give it a smooth appearance, become rather weaker with age. This makes the skin less able to ‘bounce back’, and lines begin to show.
In addition, lifestyle factors such as too much sun, smoking and pollution can all contribute to premature wrinkling. Stress may also have a role to play. Whatever the causes, most people first notice fine lines and wrinkles on their face, particularly in the eye and mouth areas.
Anti-wrinkle injections are most effective when used to reduce the signs of ageing in the following areas:
· Forehead lines – forehead/brow
· Frown lines – between the eyes
· Crow’s feet – sides of the eyes
If you have Botox®, the practitioner will make several small injections into the muscles of your face. These are done very quickly – the injections themselves only take a few minutes.
Treatment does involve needles, and some people find the injections a little uncomfortable, but you shouldn’t feel much more than a scratch. The skin may feel a bit sore at the point where you had the injections for a little while afterwards, but that should soon pass.
Here at Lux Aesthetics we take care to use the smallest, finest needles on the market. As a result, very few of our clients experience even mild discomfort.
If you prefer, ice or local anaesthetic cream can be applied to minimise sensation.
Botox® treatment is very safe. Practitioners have been using botulinum toxin (which is the technical name for Botox®) for around forty years now, so its safety profile is well known. It is injected directly into the muscles and/or sweat glands, and reaches no other parts of the body.
Treatment should only ever be given by an experienced and qualified medical practitioner. When treatments are given by people who do not meet these criteria, the process can be very risky, leading to unsightly results and complications.
Your initial results will appear within 2-5 days and continue to improve for up to 14 days, when the results will peak. In most cases the results last for 3-4 months.
As with most treatments, there is a risk of side effects. However, these are generally mild and temporary. Most common being mild bruising at the injection site.
You should not have this treatment if:
· The injection site is infected
· You are allergic to any of the ingredients
· You are pregnant or breastfeeding
· You have a neuromuscular disorder (e.g. myasthenia gravis).
· You are using blood-thinning medications including Warfarin or Heparin.
Clients can carry on with their day as normal as soon as they have had their Botox® treatment.
We recommend that for 24 hours after treatment to avoid extremes of exercise, heat (e.g. saunas, sunbeds, hot showers) and other facial treatments, but that is about it.
You should touch your face as little as possible in the 24 hours following your treatment, but moving your face, keeping the muscles in motion, will actually help Botox® to work, so we encourage you to do that.
Most clients tolerate Botox® treatment very well, but if you do experience any discomfort it is perfectly okay for you to take ordinary painkillers.
Please note: clients seeking injectable treatments, including Botox®, must attend a face-to-face consultation with one of our medical practitioners. This is to allow the practitioner to conduct a full and personalised assessment, and to discuss in full all side effects and contraindications.
